Château Quinault L’Enclos was acquired in 2008 as a project to stimulate and challenge Cheval Blanc. From the outset, this urban vineyard benefitted from the same attention and expertise as its older brother.
From the start, the acquisition of Quinault L’Enclos in 2008 was meant as a project to revitalise Cheval Blanc. This was an opportunity for the team to explore a new terrain as a space for freedom and experimentation. Only six kilometres apart, these two domains still feed off each other. The vineyards of Quinault L’Enclos lie in the commune of Libourne alongside the meandering Dordogne River. In the southern part of the town, vine cultivation dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. The 19-hectare domain of Quinault L’Enclos is an urban vineyard in the prestigious appellation of Saint-Emilion. This green enclave pays testament to the prestigious vineyards of yesteryear.
Begun in 2009, the total restructuration and recomposition of the vineyard quickly bore fruit. From 2011, Château Quinault L’Enclos was served as a premium wine at the Cheval Blanc table and, for the first time, was tasted ‘en primeur’ alongside Cheval Blanc. In 2012, it was integrated into the official classification of Saint-Emilion as a Grand Cru Classé. This lasted for a few years only as, following the example of Cheval Blanc, it didn’t apply for the 2022 classification. Since acquisition, Château Quinault L’Enclos continues to rise alongside Château Cheval Blanc, accompanied by a team motivated by the wish to showcase the terroir with ever more precision.
With 65% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc, the varieties planted at Château Quinault L’Enclos express perfectly the gravel characteristics of its soils. They also bring rich diversity and complexity which, from 2024, will be accentuated by the introduction to the blend of a small percentage of Malbec. The profile is deep and delicate with crafted, sumptuous and rounded tannins. The ‘length of the depth’ characterises this wine which is open and expressive from an early age, even if the wine is produced for ageing.
